644 million euros, the boating becomes the fourth Sardinian "company"

With an aggregate turnover of €644 million, the nautical industry has become the fourth “company” in Sardinia. A major leap from a year ago, when it ranked fifth with €400 million in total revenue. Now the nautical – one of the most important voices of the Sardinia Sea Economy – lies just behind three giants of the island economy: Saras with €10.1 billion in revenue and Sarlux with 1.5 billion companies active in oil refining and power generation; and Ibba Brothers, GDO group, with 536 million.

The analysis was curated by the Communication and the Cipnes Study Center, based on 2023 financial statements, the latest available. For the first time in Italy, the estimated data of the companies of individuals and companies – a segment not yet explored – thanks to the Cribis Group Margo platform, a national leader in enterprise data analysis. A job that returns a complete and up-to-date economic photograph of the marine industry in Sardinia.

The investigation reviewed four main compartments:

  • the boat production (worksites and demolitioners);
  • the refits, repairs and storage (maintenance and technical support);
  • the nautical tourism and tourist port (passenger, navy, rental transportation);
  • the trade (wholesale and retail sale of boats and accessories).

Sardinia lives of sea, not just on the sea

This economy picture confirms that Sardinia doesn’t just live on the sea, but of the sea. Nautical represents the convergence between industrial development, technological innovation, sustainable tourism and qualified employment. Its strategic value is growing, even in view of the ecological transition and internationalisation of the regional economy.

The nautical numbers in Sardinia

In 2023, based on the analysis conducted by Cipnes Gallura and UniOlbia, Sardinia operated 1,510 businesses of the nautical, with 5,778 employees. Total revenue is 644.049.504 euros, divided as follows:

  • Corporations: 744 businesses, 4,091 employees, €505.6 million
  • Companies of Individuals and Firms: 766 businesses, 1,687 employees, €138.4 million.

Gallura, nautical capital

The province of Gallura generates over half of Sardinia’s marine revenue (52.7%), with 717 businesses and 2,845 employees.

Totals per Fund in the Gallura (2024):

  • Manufacturing: €55,066,672

In the landscape of Sardinian marine industry, Gallura province is confirmed as the production engine of the entire Island. In 2023, in fact, beyond 68% of manufacturing revenue – equal to €49 million out of €71.8 million – was generated by Gallurean companies, in particular by the highly specialized construction sites in the Cipnes production district in Olbia.

This productive vocation is complemented by a high share also in another segment of the shipyard: that of the refit and remittance, of which Gallura has 61.2% of Sardinia’s turnover.

In nautical tourism - just like in tourism in general - the province of Gallura holds almost half of the revenues of all of Sardinia: exactly 45.6%. While in marine trade Gallura accounts for only one-fifth of the regional total (20.2%).
