Presented the degree program in Nursing in Olbia
In the Magna Room of UniOlbia, on Wednesday 13 November, the three-year degree in Nursing from the University of Sassari was officially presented, marking a historic moment for the city and the entire Gallura. For the first time in history, a medical course of the Sassarese Atheneum is offered outside its city, a result made possible through the understanding between four institutions: the University of Sassari, UniOlbia, the Municipality of Olbia and the Region of Sardinia, which finances the project.
The course, hosted in a building set up by Mater Olbia Hospital, was created in record time and represents a concrete response to the educational and healthcare needs of Sardinia. Among the partners involved is the Asl Gallura, which collaborates to integrate training and the healthcare system.
Institutional Statements
The Rector of the University of Sassari, Gavino Mariotti, emphasized the strategic importance of the initiative: «Today is an epic day for Olbia and the entire Gallura, but it is a historic step for all of Northern Sardinia. Opening a medical degree course here is the result of a long job, an extraordinary union. We have made this important commitment because it meets regional healthcare needs. At a critical time for Sardinian healthcare, this course is a strong sign of commitment to strengthening the community’s healthcare system. The goal is to make North Sardinia a model of excellence, where public and private work synergistically to ensure high quality service».
Aldo Carta, president of the UniOlbia consortium, highlighted the long-term value of the project: «This initiative is extremely valuable from a long-term perspective because health services are based on human capital. The Nursing course will help to create new opportunities for the territory and respond to growing needs».
Olbia mayor Settimo Nizzi also reiterated the social impact of opening the course: «Graduation is a great achievement and gives great satisfaction to parents. We didn’t do all this to get a coin, but to give young people an extra opportunity to study and give concrete answers to the community, especially in the field of care. This day marks a key moment for our city. I’m talking to students: commit to and take full advantage of this opportunity, which will open your door to a valuable career and help improve the quality of life of our community.”
Academic and professional interventions
The ceremony was also attended by Angela Spanu, Director of the Department of Medicine and Surgery; Franca Deriu, Director of the Department of Biomedical Sciences; Corrado Rubino, chairman of the Fitting Facility of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery; and Pasquale Bandiera, president of the Nursing degree. The latter are the protagonists of the educational offer, the remedial course, the identification of priorities. Directors and presidents were thanked, along with all associates, by the Rector on more than one occasion.
Marcello Acciaro also contributed. general manager of ASL Gallura, explaining the challenges of healthcare and confirming the willingness to collaborate with the new degree course. Marcello Giannico, Managing Director of Mater Hospital, thanked all employees in the facility and the company that won the classroom contract, built in record time, and reiterated the importance, for both Mater and students, proximity and collaboration.
Gianluca Chelo, provincial president of the Order of Nurses, expressed great satisfaction with the course, he went to fill a vacuum in Sardinia.
Finally, Melania Serra, Olbia’s representative of Nursing students, spoke, who, with a careful intervention, promised maximum commitment from the students: «I promise that not only will we not disappoint you, but that we will try to exceed your expectations of us».
Olbia’s core role and course numbers
With the opening of the Nursing course, the fifth active in the city, Olbia remains an expanding university hub. UniOlbia, with the support of the Municipality of Olbia and the Sardinia Region, worked to strengthen the educational offer and make university education more accessible to young Sardinia.
At the moment, there are 170 total nurses from the University of Sassari, of whom 40 are registered at the Olbia office. Students come from every corner of Sardinia, including small municipalities These include Ploaghe, Putifigari, Carloforte, Lunamatrona and Guspini, confirming the attractiveness of the Hollby university pole.
A response to healthcare needs
The opening of the Nursing course in Olbia comes at a crucial time for regional healthcare. In the context of a shortage of healthcare professionals, training new professionals is a critical contribution to the future of Sardinia’s healthcare system and a sign of trust for local communities.
The project is a testament to the joint efforts of universities, local entities and healthcare facilities to build a training system that meets the needs of new generations and the community.
